to DxG95 : You can get curved sounding rods so there is no issue and you only go in as far as it feels comfortable.

to firball5 : Not everyone responds the same way, and it can take a long time to get used to the feelings.

to RomanticMind0 : The first few times you do sounding it will hurt. It takes time for the urethra to become desensitized to something foreign being rubbed up and down it. Once you have been doing it for a while, it stops hurting (although there can still sometimes be a little discomfort). The trick is to start with small diameter rod, use lots of lube and go slowly. Start with inserting only a small way, maybe 1 inch and do that for a few days then go deeper, maybe 2 inches and do that for a while and slowly get used to it. I have been doing it for a long time.
